Milestone for Matteo: Thesis chapter accepted and Thesis submitted!

April 13, 2026

Over the last couple of weeks, Matteo got some great news: another chapter of his thesis has been accepted (Journal of Experimental Biology). In this chapter, we explored how mitochondrial functioning in a long lived species, the common tern (Sterna hirundo) changes with age and sex. Using a wide age rang (2 to 24 years), we found that females exhibit higher overall mitochondrial respiration as well as a decline in the coupling efficiency with age in  both sexes. This work is part of a great collaboration with OscarSandra Bouwhuis and Andreas Nord (Lund University).

On another hand, Matteo has finally submitted his thesis. This consists in an impressive body of work, with five of the seven chapters already accepted and two submitted (fingers crossed!). Now we are simply awaiting confirmation from the University of Oldenburg regarding the final defence date.
